If you have a younger child, how can you give them limited access to YouTube without having full access to its content? Google has tried to answer this question with the YouTube Kids app. Today I’ll show you how to download and set it up on iOS and Android.
Now, while I spend a lot of time talking about problems and challenges for digital parents, I also wanna spend time talking about helpful resources and tools. Today, I wanna look at one of those tools. And that’s the YouTube App that was specifically designed for kids that Google recently released. Now, let’s take a look at it.
Both Android and iOS users can acquire the YouTube Kids App from their respective app store. Simply search for YouTube Kids and then you can download this free application from Google. When you first launch the application, you will be asked to set up the specific parental control settings, such as disabling the search feature. Now, while you are guided through this Setup process, rest assured, you can change these settings later.
After you get through the initial process, simply click the Lock icon in the bottom right corner. Now, it’s recommended that you set a passcode so that your child can’t change these settings.
One additional feature provided with the application is the ability to set a timer. This can be accessed from the Lock icon as well. Once you select timer, you simply select the number of minutes you want your child to be able to use the application. Once the timer runs out, your child won’t be able to watch any additional videos unless you reset the timer.
Google makes very clear that this app doesn’t guarantee that there won’t be inappropriate content because it uses an automated system to pick videos that area appropriate for children.
Overall, you’ll find that this is much safer than the standard YouTube app, albeit, with a much more limited set of content.
