In today’s episode we will cover a basic feature of both iOS and Android devices: Airplane Mode. While this feature wasn’t created as a tool for parents, it can be a useful tool for beginner digital parents to temporarily disable Internet access on the device.
Whether you have an iOS or an Android device you have a similar challenge. If your child needs to use the device for some reason, how can you make sure that they don’t view content or access things you wouldn’t want them to? One of the solutions is amazingly simple: airplane mode. This is a tool that every digital parent should know, and we’re going to take a look at it today. Here we go.
Airplane mode is a very basic way to turn off internet access. If you haven’t yet mastered restrictions on iOS or screen pinning on Android, this may be a quick tool that you can leverage. Airplane mode works by disabling all communication from the phone. It was designed to be used when you were on an airplane and you needed to turn off Wi-Fi, cellular and Bluetooth. To enable airplane mode on iOS, you just swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open control center. Press the airplane icon to enable airplane mode. Double check that the Wi-Fi button is turned off. At this point, the phone won’t have any internet access.
To enable airplane mode on Android, swipe down from the top of the device to open the notification tray and then swipe down again to see the expanded options. Select the airplane icon to enable airplane mode. Just as with iOS, make sure the Wi-Fi icon is disabled. Now for both, to turn off airplane mode, simply follow the same steps and select the airplane icon again. It is important to note that if your child has experience with your device, they can simply turn off airplane mode or even turn on Wi-Fi while airplane mode is enabled. Because of this, we would recommend this as a temporary solution for younger children.
